In philosophy, it's linked to physicalism and naturalism, asserting consciousness arises from physical processes, while in everyday terms, it describes greed and focus on material wealth. 

These days, it’s easy to get caught up in consumption, possessions, and comfort while neglecting matters of the heart or spirit.
