The Equation Defines the Energy (E) of a Particle in its Rest Frame as the Product of Mass (m) with the Speed of Light Squared ( c^2 )

E=mc^2 is perhaps the most famous equation in all physics, but very few people actually know what the equation means, or where it comes from. In this video I would like to show one method for deriving this equation, as well as provide some insight into what the equation actually means. Along the way we will also touch upon some of the most fascinating features of Einstein’s theory of special relativity, including time dilation, the reason why nothing can travel faster than the speed of light, and the relationship between energy and momentum for massless particles.

The reason it is so hard to define is because it’s an abstract notion. In physics, the concept of “energy” is really just a kind of shorthand, a tool to help balance the books. It is always conserved (or converted into mass) so is incredibly useful in working out the results of any kind of physical or chemical process. There is no physical “essence” of energy, and no such thing as “pure energy”. It is always carried by something, usually in the form of movement.

In physics, mass is defined as the amount of matter contained in an object, which directly influences its inertia, or resistance to changes in motion.

The "Speed of Light" is a Structural Constant of the Universe! It is 299,792,458 Meters (about 186,000 miles) per Second.
