It has been estimated that over 300 million tonnes of plastic is produced annually and around 14 million tonnes of plastic end up in the oceans around the world!

To make matters worse, plastic does not degrade easily and can stay in the environment for a long time. Depending on the plastic it can take between twenty and five hundred years for the plastic to decompose.

Microplastics are tiny pieces of plastic that pollute the environment and measure less than 5 millimeters long, which is about the size of a pencil eraser. They do not break down easily, so they accumulate in the ocean, soil, and even inside human and animal bodies.

Although environmental pollution can be caused by natural events such as forest fires and active volcanoes, use of the word pollution generally implies that the contaminants have an anthropogenic source—that is, a source created by human activities.
